Utah State University Eastern (USU Eastern) announced they have extended esports scholarship offers to two Timpanogos High School (THS) seniors: Keaton Anderson and Curtis Sheets.
OREM, Utah - nvtip -- Utah State University Eastern (USU Eastern) announced they have extended esports scholarship offers to two Timpanogos High School (THS) seniors: Keaton Anderson and Curtis Sheets. The two students are part of THS chapter of ITeam USA, a student career and technical organization, that has been promoting high school esports in the state of Utah.Keaton and Curtis will be competing in Rocket League, a competitive vehicular soccer video game, for USU Eastern as esports student athletes.
"Utah State University Eastern is excited to give out three scholarships for Rocket League," stated Kevin Van Der Spek, Esports Coach, USU Eastern Athletics. "My hope is the scholarships can help these students reach their academic goals, while making a name for themselves in the Rocket League community. I was able to find these students through their involvement with ITeam USA. Communicating with ITeam allowed me to find students who worked hard and wanted to continue their education and Video game career. I thank them for putting in the hard work to build an Esports community in Utah high schools."
Michelle Price, Director of Career and Technical Education Alpine School District stated: "Over the last three years, Alpine School District has worked to increase course offerings in Computer Science and Information Technology. During the 2020-2021 school year, ASD led the state in implementing ITeam USA and Esports opportunities for students. This was a joint effort by our CTE and Technology Departments with the support of our School Board and Cabinet. Many people were involved in making this opportunity possible and we are so proud of these students for taking advantage of that opportunity and wish them the best as they attend USU Eastern. Because we have the best Computer Science teachers, we expect to see these programs continue to grow and provide opportunities such as this for many more students."

"Timpanogos High School is very proud of these students, and we wish them well with their college endeavors next year as they undoubtedly will pursue the same excellence that they have achieved at our school" pronounced Vennie Della Cioppa, Career and Technical Education Advisor and Coach.
"ITeam USA is thrilled to be a part of these students' accomplishments. Esports is the gate to IT and CS careers. Dedicated instructors encourage students to focus on careers they teach in their classrooms," continued Robert Sorenson, ITeam USA State Director. "February 15th of this year, ITeam USA and PlayVS launched Official Esports for Utah High Schools. Many High Schools participated in League of Legends, Rocket League and Smash Bros. competitions. We stream live on 'The League Esports Channel' every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays at 5:00 pm. Advisors are finding an increase in class enrollment as Esports participation increases. ITeam USA strives to meet the demand of IT and CS careers in the state through working with local High Schools and Universities. Congratulations to these accomplished students."
About the recipients.
"Keaton has always been a very self-motivated student," Christine Anderson, Keaton's mother, related when asked about her son. "He has always kept at least part-time employment through high school while maintaining excellent grades." The youngest of four, Keaton also serves as the President of FBLA and is a recipient of the Sterling Scholar. "I think that esports is a great way to encourage a different generation of students to socialize with like-minded, diverse groups, learn how to be part of a team, and at the same time, participate in activities that lend a positive influence to students as they build invaluable soft skills that will help them in their future careers," said Keaton when asked about his experiences in Timpanogos High School Esports. "I am thrilled to be a part of the ITeam movement to support students to be career-ready through activities such as esports."
