Nevada Insurance Enrollment Elaborates On Health Insurance Scams You Should Watch Out For
LAS VEGAS - nvtip -- Signing up for health insurance is always a little confusing, but this year, with changes to federal requirements and in how Nevadans sign up for coverage, there are even more challenges. Unfortunately, there are scammers out there who try to take advantage of this uncertainty and confusion.
While Nevada Health Link takes fraud protection and prevention seriously and works alongside law enforcement to address fraud claims, falling for a scam can leave you vulnerable. Knowing the most common scams and red flags to watch out for is the best way to protect yourself against identity theft and financial loss.
3 Common Health Insurance Scams
Fake Health Insurance Agents and Brokers
The most common type of health insurance scam involves the scammer pretending to be a licensed health insurance agent or broker. They claim that for a small fee, they can help you find the right plan. However, this "small fee" gives them access to your bank account.
Discount Medical Plans
Discount medical plans aren't illegal, but they're not the same as qualified health insurance plans. For this reason, it's illegal to sell them as health insurance. Scammers often try to sell discount plans that provide discounted rates at pharmacies and doctor's offices. However, these plans don't cover ACA's 10 essential health benefits. If you purchase one of these plans expecting comprehensive coverage, you will end up with extensive medical expenses.

New Insurance or Medicare Card
If someone contacts you about getting a new insurance card, whether it be by phone or mail, beware of giving them personal information like your Social Security number and bank account information. If you receive a new Medicare card in the mail that you did not ask for, call 1-800-MEDICARE to verify its authenticity.
