Off-the-grid compound in the middle of nowhere can soon be your new favorite vacation getaway
LAS VEGAS - nvtip -- Twenty-twenty wasn't the best year for most things. Yet, the year of a global pandemic turned out to be the perfect time to sell a bunkeresque, off-the-grid fortress located 35 miles outside of Goldfield, Nevada.
This unusual but completely self-sustaining property is known as Hard Luck Mine Castle and it recently closed escrow for $550,000. The four-story, 22-room, 8,000 square foot home sits on 40 acres of land off Highway 267 in Esmerelda County. It is built of fortified steel, cinder blocks, and 16-inch thick concrete walls and runs on its own solar and wind power, diesel generators, 4,000-gallon water tank, and 3,000-gallon propane tank.
"We are extremely pleased with the sale of the Hard Luck Castle and what we believe to be one of the more unique properties sold in Nevada this year," said Brian Krueger, senior vice president of strategic services for Coldwell Banker Premier Realty with whom the property was exclusively listed. "The process, while much longer than a typical sale, was culminated with a willing seller, maximum exposure, and a creative buyer who plans to leverage the distinctive location and attributes of the property for others to enjoy."

The new owner, Richard Socher with HLMC, LLC, plans to put the home on the short-term rental market. Hard Luck Castle is not all doomsday and no play. The multifarious residence provides durability and entertainment alike. There's a game room, theatre, fountain room, solarium planetarium, wine cellar, and many more interesting features around every corner.
"I am excited to enable others to experience the beauty of the desert and stay in this unique place," said Socher. "I think it's the only castle you'll be able to rent on Airbnb in this area of the world. With my favorite national park nearby, epic off-roading, and beautiful stargazing I am sure many people will appreciate this space."
The Nevada desert is one of the greatest playgrounds where outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy recreational activities such as riding ATVs, hiking, or exploring the historic gold mine which is also part of the property. It's truly a ghost-town getaway for those seeking an out-of-the-box retreat. But it isn't available to rent just yet.
