HENDERSON, Nev. - nvtip -- The Avery Burton Foundation (ABF) announced it has awarded five Clark County high school students $1,000 each for achievements in the classroom, athletics and for expressing themselves in heartfelt essays describing how they had overcome adversities in their lives. More than 500 students submitted applications for 2025.
Students who received the 2025 Avery Burton Excellence in Academics & Sports Memorial Scholarships were: Elizabeth Babauta, Durango High School, Varsity Soccer and Varsity Badminton; Alice Ciobanu, Coronado High School, Elite Swimming; Dexter Brimhall, Coronado High School, Varsity Volleyball; Justin Montoya, Southeast Career Technical Academy, Cross Country, Track and Field; Bailey Haberman, Silverado High School, Varsity Tennis; and alternate Keian Benavente, Durango High School, Cross Country.
"This year's applicants were truly inspiring — balancing academic excellence, varsity athletics and community service, all while overcoming personal adversity," Dr. Jeanette Lee, ABF Board Member and owner of 20/20 Optometry of Silicon Valley in San Jose, CA., said. "It's an honor to support the Avery Burton Scholarship Foundation in recognizing these resilient, high-achieving students, as they take their next step towards higher education."

Scholarships are administered by the Public Education Foundation. PEF awards more than 1,000 scholarships each year to help students pursue their dreams of attending college or vocational school.
"To read these students' personal essays and see what they had to overcome in the pursuit of their educational goals is truly heartfelt and inspiring," ABF Board Member Christina Aldan of Arana Software said. "Selecting five scholarship winners and one alternate was a challenge. In a sense, though, every student who took the time to submit an application and write about their personal challenges is already a winner. They met the challenge, overcame barriers and set their career compasses on a true course for success. Everyone at ABF is extremely proud of all the students who applied for scholarships this year."
This year's scholarship recipients will be highlighted at the First Annual ABF Scholarship and Gala Event, June 6-7, 2025 hosted by Resorts World Las Vegas. The two-day event will bring together leaders, advocates and supporters wanting to change the landscape of mental health and wellness.
