~ In a groundbreaking move, Google and Sphere Entertainment Co. have announced a new partnership that will utilize AI technology to bring the classic film, The Wizard of Oz, to life in an immersive experience at Sphere's interior display plane. This project, set to open in Las Vegas on August 28, 2025, is expected to be a pivotal moment in entertainment technology and a leap forward for the future of visual storytelling.
The partnership between Google and Sphere involves the use of generative AI (gen AI) and first-of-its-kind engineering work. This ambitious project will require the collaboration of thousands of creators, coders, VFX artists, and more. According to Jim Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, this partnership was necessary in order to push boundaries and achieve something extraordinary.
One of the key components of this partnership is the deployment of fine-tuned Gemini models, Veo 2, and Imagen 3 by Google Cloud and Google DeepMind. These advanced AI technologies will intelligently enhance the film's resolution, extend backgrounds, and digitally recreate existing characters who would not otherwise appear on screen together. Additionally, Google Cloud's highly scalable and AI-optimized infrastructure will support the massive data and computational demands required for building immersive experiences.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud expressed his excitement about this partnership stating that it is an example of pushing the boundaries of generative AI to deliver new experiences for audiences while also creating opportunities for studios and filmmakers.
The original version of The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939 using revolutionary three-strip Technicolor technology. Now nearly 90 years later, Sphere will bring an immersive version of this classic film to its 160,000-square-foot interior display plane using a combination of traditional VFX techniques and Google AI. This will result in a never-before-seen experience that can only be achieved at Sphere.
To achieve this ambitious goal, Google Cloud and DeepMind are utilizing advanced techniques such as super resolution, outpainting, performance generation, and context window. Veo is being used to intelligently enhance the film's resolution to a crisp 16k image, essential for Sphere's 16k x 16k resolution interior display plane. This process requires sophisticated algorithms capable of understanding and reconstructing intricate details from the original film.

In order to expand the visual scope of the film for Sphere's immersive environment, Veo is also being used to seamlessly extend backgrounds and characters. This will create a feeling of being present with the characters in the film. Additionally, innovative storytelling techniques have been developed using Veo and Gemini that allow multiple characters to remain on screen for extended periods, enhancing audience immersion.
The use of Gemini and Veo's extra-long context window capabilities is crucial for maintaining coherence across extended sequences. This allows for the processing of massive datasets, ensuring that the enhanced visuals remain consistent throughout the film.
The partnership between Google and Sphere Entertainment Co. is a testament to the power of generative AI and its potential in revolutionizing visual storytelling. With this project set to open in just a few years, audiences can look forward to an unforgettable experience that combines cutting-edge technology with a beloved classic film.
