NAAFA's webinar panel discusses their experiences in helping change the anti-discrimination laws in their city or county. Learn the strategies that were most successful in their efforts.
LAS VEGAS - nvtip -- NAAFA's Board of Directors invites you to the next in the NAAFA Webinar Series 2020, Adding Weight to Anti-Discrimination Law in Your Area featuring Dany Atkins, Carole Cullum and Sean Massey hosted by Tigress Osborn. Join us on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 8pm EDT/5pm PDT for this informative panel discussion that will give us insight into ways to approach changing legislation to protect fat people from discrimination.
Protection against discrimination based on the size or weight of your body is a reality in only one state and six cities in the United States. According to statistics from the CDC, this potentially affects the lives of 42.4% of Americans; including 49.6% blacks, 44.8% Hispanics 42.2% whites and 17.4% Asians.

Legislative protections cover employment, housing, medical treatment, education and public accommodation. In the wake of a pandemic where people have lost their jobs and many have lost the lives of loved ones, we believe discrimination against people's body size will affect their everyday living. Adverse decisions may be made based on weight in geographic areas not protected.
In our efforts to oppose racism and oppression of marginalized people including body size in anti-discrimination laws can work in favor of that cause and give protections to intersections of 'age, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression'.
Our panel is comprised of three people that have played a key role in changing the anti-discrimination law: Dany Atkins for the City of Santa Cruz, CA; Sean Massey for the City of Binghamton, NY; and Carole Cullum for the City and County of San Francisco, CA. They will discuss some of the ways those changes came into being and what you can potentially do to change the laws in your area.
