Layoffs and service changes as the hospital restructures to a rural emergency hospital.
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - nvtip -- Boulder City Hospital, an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, will change provider types effective May 1, 2026, under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, from a Critical Access Hospital to a Rural Emergency Hospital. This change is designed to ensure that essential healthcare services remain available and sustainable within the community over time.
According to Thomas Maher, Chief Executive Officer, Boulder City Hospital, "As the only rural hospital in Nevada not supported by a taxing district, mining dollars, or a corporate health system, Boulder City Hospital remains committed to serving the healthcare needs of our community. This transition is not about reducing care—it's about preserving care. Converting to a Rural Emergency Hospital ensures that our community continues to have reliable emergency and outpatient services supported by financial stability today and into the future."
Impacted areas of the transition include the closure of inpatient areas, including the medical/surgical and geriatric behavioral health units, resulting in a layoff of 71 employees. The hospital is working closely with affected employees to explore internal transfer opportunities. It is also coordinating with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation (DETR) and the State of Nevada Rapid Response team for résumé-building workshops, career counseling, and job search assistance. Patients requiring more than 24-hour observation care will be stabilized and transferred to a Level I/II trauma center for ongoing care.
Boulder City Hospital will host an informative community meeting on March 19, 2026, from 2pm to 4 pm PDT, at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 1399 San Felipe Dr, Boulder City, NV 89005, in the multipurpose center.
